European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.
To support our Data Analysis Group we are looking for two
Machine Learning Research Scientists (f/m/d)
The Position
The main focus of the position is to explore and exploit opportunities to efficiently apply machine learning techniques and methods in the scientific environment of a large free-electron laser facility.
As part of the Data Analysis group, you will:
- review existing applications of machine learning in a scientific environment and collaborate with similar projects undertaken at partner institutions like CFEL, LCLS or ESRF.
- identify opportunities for machine learning at European XFEL, explore and implement the most promising candidates together with the scientific or technical staff.
- provide training through seminar contributions and workshops both internally and externally to spread a better understanding of the prospects, requirements and limits of machine learning in a scientific context.
- offer consulting and support to staff and users performing experiments at EuXFEL in applying machine learning techniques.
Requirements
- BSc, MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering
- at least 3 years of programming experience, ideally within a scientific context
- expert knowledge of Python and several popular machine learning toolkits
- experience of applying machine learning methods to scientific problems
- experience with accelerating machine learning workloads through parallel / high performance computing (SLURM, MPI etc.) or GPUs
- experience with working in a Linux environment and git
- strong communication and collaboration skills
- strong oral and written English skills (language of work is English)
- willingness to undertake shift work
The following are considered as assets:
- experience with HDF5 incl. virtual data sets and analysis/processing of such data
- experience with software testing and continuous integration
- experience in photon science or working with photon scientists
- experience in software optimisation

Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
